Great Resource: The Jesus Storybook Bible

Just about every night, our family finishes our day (at least the part of the day that our girls, almost two and almost four year old, are awake) with the same routine: read a chapter from The Jesus Storybook Bible, then pray, then sing songs (one silly song, and one song to God). I highly recommend The Jesus Storybook Bible to any parent that desires to teach the Bible to his or her children. While not every story is represented, and most certainly to not include every detail, this is no watered-down children's Bible. Very serious subjects are covered, and Sally Lloyd-Jones goes through great lengths to point to Jesus on every page. In addition, the illustrations by Jago are amazing.

It's definitely a book worth owning. Even when children get old enough to read a "full" version of the Bible, it's still a great resource for capturing and highlighting the captivating narratives and stories found in the Bible. I've even used it to teach our high school students. Here's an excerpt from Lloyd-Jone's take on the wise men visiting Jesus:

The three men knelt before the little King. They took off their rich royal turbans and gleaming, golden crowns. They bowed their noble heads to the ground and gave him their sparkling treasures.

The journey that had begun so many centuries before had led three wise men here. To a little town. To a little house. To a little child.

To the King God had promised David all those years before.

But this child was a new kind of king. Though he was the Prince of Heaven, he had become poor. Though he was the Mighty God, he had become a helpless baby. This King hadn't come to be the boss. He had come to be a servant (pp. 198-199).
