The year in review: Super-Duper/Über-Goober (Ministry Edition)

Yep, you read the title right. Super-Duper/Über-Goober. In my first year of youth ministry, I was sitting in Starbucks with some high school students talking about the highs and lows of the past semester, and in a convoluted way that was quite by accident, one of the students--Michael--came up with a new name for highs and lows: Super-Duper/Über-Goober. The Super-Duper is the best thing (the high) of the past day/week/month/year, and the Über-Goober is the worst thing (the low). I still use it in small groups and when guests come to our house for dinner.

The proper way to introduce this little exercise is, "It's time for America's fastest growing quiz sensation: Super-Duper/Über-Goober." It is often customary for a person familiar with the exercise to note--correctly--that Super-Duper/Über-Goober is neither a quiz nor a sensation. So without further ado, it's time for the Jesus and Teenagers Year-End edition of America's fastest growing quiz sensation: Super-Duper/Über-Goober. Usually only one "thing" is allowed per Super-Duper or Über-Goober, but I will have a few honorable mentions as well, since it is the year-end edition, after all. Note that today I will stick to ministry-related Super-Dupers and Über-Goobers. Tomorrow, I'll focus on the personal ones.

Super-Duper
The winner: I love my job and I still can't believe I get paid to do what I do.

Honorable Mention:
Our youth leadership team continues to take fantastic shape, and I'm grateful for the leaders I serve with.

Moving to such a large church made me worried I wouldn't know the vast majority of students, but I've been pleasantly surprised how many students I've really gotten to know--without much help from Facebook.

I serve at a church with an amazing, healthy staff. I can't believe I actually look forward to staff meeting every week!

Our backpacking trip this summer with students was awesome.

We (our church) launched our second campus in October, the youth ministry is starting off really well, and we just hired a youth director for that campus. In addition, it looks like our Latino ministry will move off site as it's own full-fledged campus in 2011!

Über-Goober
The winner (er, loser?): Having to tell a leader he/she would not be able to serve on our team.

Honorable Mention:
My good friend and fellow student pastor got sick the day before our youth backpacking trip such that he could not attend.

I was not as present with the high school students I serve this fall as I would like to be. It was for good reasons: we launched an additional campus without a full staff in place, so we all pitched in where needed (I helped with the new campus' youth ministry for all of October and also preached more than I usually do). We have great leaders who provided awesome teaching and leadership, but I'll be glad to be back at most of the weekly large group gatherings next semester.

Looking at the list, I'm thankful that there are far more Super-Dupers than Über-Goobers! It hasn't always been that way in years past. What are your ministry-related Super-Dupers and Über-Goobers for 2010?
